Encantos Fellowship Program

We’re On A Mission To Discover The Next Generation Of Underrepresented Talent

Focused on identifying, teaching and supporting the next generation of underrepresented talent, the Encantos Fellowship is a year-long creative mentorship and training program that aims to provide emerging writers, artists, and developers with the tools, skills, and knowledge they need to launch a professional career in the family entertainment industry.

As a public benefit corporation, Encantos puts diversity, equality and inclusion at the heart of every brand it creates. With over half of all children in the United States now being multicultural, it is critical to have greater representation in both the content that is being consumed as well as the talent creating the stories and characters. Only by increasing the amount of underrepresented perspectives will the industry be able to reflect today’s diverse kids and families. Participants need not be published or established.  Inspired by the great tradition of literary fellowships awarded to writers and artists in their formative years, the Encantos Fellowship is designed to be a transformative learning opportunity for today’s rising stars to become tomorrow’s industry leaders.

Encantos Fellow
Spring 2020

Kayla Bowles

Kayla Bowles, an 11th-grade student and National Honor Society member at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York, has been selected as the first Encantos Fellow.  A native New Yorker, Kayla is a writer, artist and aspiring filmmaker who has taken a pre-college writing course at Brown University and a writer’s workshop at Sarah Lawrence College. An avid reader, her interest in writing began when she was in elementary school. Many of Kayla’s stories are inspired by her own experiences and interests, ranging from sisterhood and the ocean to magic and mystery.

About the Fellowship

The Encantos Fellowship is comprised of the following:

Education: Aligning with the Encantos philosophy to build purpose-driven stories, Fellows will work with the Encantos education team to incorporate 21st century learning, literacy, and life skills into their creative project.

Length: The Encantos Fellowship is a twelve-month program.

Marketing: Fellows will be advised on how best to package and present their creative project to both consumers and industry professionals. From presentations and brand bibles to social media and digital marketing, fellows will learn the tricks of the trade from the best in the business.

Mentorship: Fellows are mentored throughout the program by accomplished industry executives and distinguished members of the Encantos Advisory Board. Over the course of the fellowship, Fellows will have regular meetings with mentors to offer feedback on their work in progress.

Non-Profit Initiative: In line with our purpose-driven philosophy as a public benefit corporation, Fellows are expected to identify a non-profit initiative that will be tied to their creative project.

Project: Fellows are expected to work on developing their own original creative project, ranging from a book, story, art and illustration, digital design, and more that can be presented to executives in the family entertainment industry.

Public Reviews: Fellows will participate in four quarterly public readings or reviews to receive candid feedback and to discuss their creative project’s strengths and areas for growth. The fellowship culminates in a Final Reading to showcase the progress each fellow has made.

Stipend: The fellowship includes a $5,000 stipend.

At the conclusion of the program, a creative project may be awarded a publishing or development deal from Encantos. The program provides fellowship support at the high school, college, and postgraduate levels. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program who can demonstrate superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in family entertainment, show promise of future achievement as creative talent, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the family entertainment industry. The next Fellowship application process opens in Fall 2020.

Applications for the Encantos Fellows Spring 2020 program are now closed. We will open the Encantos Fellows Fall 2020 program in June.

Applications for the Spring 2020 program are now closed.

Please do NOT include ANY contact info (such as name, email, website, etc.) on your script or your art.  We ask that your script sample should be no more than 9 pages (10 pages in total with the title page – please follow application instructions for the title page). All scripts must be submitted in PDF format. Your script should be in 11-point Arial font, and it must highlight family-friendly original content for children (ages 12 and under). “Original” is defined as stories, characters and art should be your own, and NOT Encantos or anyone else’s characters. We’re looking for purpose-driven original characters and stories that inspire 21st century kids to learn 21st century skills!

All documents should be saved and uploaded as PDF files.

Unfortunately, no.  While you may be a dynamic do, Encantos can only accept individual writers and artists to our program. If you are in a creative partnership, you must submit a script or art that you wrote by yourself.

We ask that you only send us writing that is in a script format designed for the small screen (i.e., linear television, streaming, etc.) or the big screen (an animated feature film, etc.).

While we appreciate the effort, in order to be fair to all we can only accept one application per person.

Yes, the goal of the Encantos Fellowship is to develop your creative project and we will be working with you on it throughout the program.

We believe good ideas can come from anywhere and we encourage kids of all ages over 16 to submit applications.  This includes students in high school, college, and postgraduate level programs.  If you are under 18, you must get consent from your parents or legal guardian.

No, professional writing or artistic  experience is not necessary to apply.  Encantos is a purpose-driven B-Corp and what we care most about is your creative passion, your cultural authenticity and your voice.   —what is most important is that applicants show a passion for writing. Our goal is to identify and nurture new writers from underrepresented backgrounds for children’s educational media. Therefore applicants cannot have extensive media writing experience, such as having written more than 6 episodes for a network or cable series.

While we are truly citizens of the world, unfortunately at this time the Encantos Fellowship is only accepting applications from those with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.  That’s why we create the Encantos Fellowship, which is free of charge to apply and to participate.

Yes, when we open the Encantos Fellows Fall 2020 program selected applicants will be invited to take part in an interview process with the selection committee.

The details for the Encantos Fellows Fall 2020 program have not been announced yet.
